Micro pitch-shifting has been around for decades and in that time, regardless of format (i.e. hardware or software) it's functionality has remained largely the same. While some may invoke the "if it ain't broke, don't fix it" mantra, who says you can't go ahead and make it better? Well, nobody at Boz Digital, which is why ProVocative was created. Quick and easy to dial in, its high- and low-pass filters, width control, and wet/dry knobs let you add thickness or bring out the air in vocals without sounding robotic; subtly or aggressively widen guitars, synth pads, or drums; and mix wet and dry signal to taste. It's light on the CPU and heavy on sound quality.<b>ProVocative-Cracking the Code</b>ProVocative is an inspired new version of the legendary micro pitch-shifter of days gone by (A hint to its identity lies within a joke we've heard at least, Hmm, 3000 times: Child, you so ugly, Even the tide wouldn't take you out). While the hardware became ubiquitous in high-end and mid-level studios the world over, it was quite complicated to use. As a result, two go-to presets emerged; 231, which became to go-to for vocal thickening, and 521, which combined micro pitch-shifting with slap delay, the standard for depth and widening. All but the most adventurous tweakers kept that 'big bucks box' dedicated to those effects (because who has time to read manuals and futz around while the clock is ticking). In the studio, you want great results and you need them quickly, which is what ProVocative is all about.<b>Mixer Section</b>With other pitch-shifting plug-ins, the ability to run the effect in parallel with the dry signal for a more controlled, natural sound, ProVocative generously gives you individual Wet and Dry knobs so you can use it as an insert effect and dial in the amount of effect you want in one convenient location. However, if you prefer the functionality of a blend knob, you can engage the Link button, which gangs the Wet and Dry knobs together to act like a wet/dry mix control.<b>Filter Section</b>ProVocative's most unique addition to traditional pitch-shifting is its high- and low-pass filter section, which enables you to select the frequency range it applies micro-shifting to via slider. You can bypass or enable these filters by clicking on the HPF or LPF symbols. These filters will only EQ the wet sound, leaving the dry sound unaffected. The main benefit of the filter section is that it enables to thicken or widen a specific frequency range while retaining an overall more natural sound-unless you want to go full robotic.<b>Note: </b>To achieve a sweet and smooth subtle widening, simply filter out a bit of the high and low end of your pitch shifted tracks<b>Width</b>As its name suggests, width controls widening of the pitch-shifted tracks. When set to positive 100%, the pitch-shifted track is panned to the right, while negative 100% pans the track to the left. In the tradition of everyone's favorite studio gear, Imperial Delay gives you maximum sonic possibilities with a minimum of knob twiddling. While the GUI of Imperial Delay is simple and straightforward, it offers far more creative options than its streamlined front panel suggests. Since Imperial Delay can function as both a delay and multi-effects processor, it's designed to draw minimal CPU power, which enables multiple instances-something that will come in very handy if you want to dedicate its various capabilities to specific applications such as a lead vocal delay, stereo widening effects, modulation and color, and detune and chorus effects. You can also use it as a distortion generator, or throw caution to the wind and create effects previously unheard by human ears.<b>Main view</b>The Delay knob is where the royal edicts of Imperial Delay are carried out. Delay modes include Sync, which tracks your DAW project tempo displaying note values (including triplets); Free lets you dial in a delay value from 0.1 to 10s; and Tap lets you tap in a value in the absence of a DAW tempo setting. There is also independent L-C-R channel activation with a mode display. If you click on the mode display, it offers six options, including standard stereo mode; left/right swap; two mono modes; and two ping pong modes.<b>Offset</b>Rather than split the interface into two sections with duplicate controls when you select stereo or ping pong modes, Imperial Delay has a simple Offset control that, as its name implies, lets you offset the left and right channel delays (right channel only). Once set, the offset maintains at the same ratio regardless of the main delay setting. For example, with the delay knob set at 344ms with a 10ms offset (354ms right), if you change the main delay setting to 244ms, the right channel will be 254ms, maintaining the 10ms offset.<b>Effects</b>Controls for sound design and effects include:• Drive, which adds distortion and harmonics to the input signal, along with a 20dB overdrive boost• Feedback sets how the delay is fed back into itself, along with a secondary feedback value that activates when signal drops below its threshold setting• Modulation, which is a short-modulated delay within the feedback loop• Smear, which softens the delayed signal, rounding off the sharp edges of echo to act more like reverb, which can be very useful for instruments with pronounced attacks• Color, which is a tone-shaping control that adds more color with each feedback pass. It also has a slant filter that enables drastic tonal changes without significant volume changes• Chorus is a stereo chorus effect that occurs within the feedback loop, that can create higher timing variation between voices• Duck is a compressor that prevents delays from overwhelming the dry input signal• Width is a straightforward control for stereo widening• Dry and Wet knobs provide independent control of input signal and effect levels<b>Go Deep</b>While the main control display is...
