rich, impressionistic, exotic, erotically charged even, Karol Szymanowski's music appears as a world in it's own right, a refuge from the harshest aspects of reality, but also a place in which, paradoxically, the dreamer can find the strength and solace needed to cope with the real world and is drawn into an alternative, heightened state of consciousness. Sueye Park and Roland Pöntinen take us on a journey through the Polish composer's works for violin and piano. While the early Violin Sonata in D minor already shows Szymanowski's precocious talent in writing for violin, the Romance in D major and the Nocturne et Tarantelle indicate the emergence of a feverish and exotic atmosphere as well as the musical expression of physical intoxication, a characteristic of the composer's mature works. Mythes (1915) represents Szymanowski at the zenith of his artistry, creating 'a new mode of expression for the violin' and through this an other-worldly musical language. La Berceuse d'Aïtacho Enia concludes this disc in a dreamy yet troubled mood, as if the pains of the real world had ultimately found a way to reach us.

Paul Hindemith and Karl Amadeus Hartmann were born a decade apart and died in the same month. Hindemith was the more inclusive artist while Hartmann more fully reflected the cultural concerns of his time; as conveyed by the contemporaneous but aesthetically very different pieces on this . Composed in 1942 during his stay in the United States, Ludus Tonalis was first performed in 1943 in Chicago. It is one of the greatest solo piano works of the mid-20th century, exploring matters of technique, theory, inspiration, and communication. This masterpiece comprises all 12 major and/or minor keys and was intended to be the 20th century equivalent to J.S. Bach's The WellTempered Clavier. Written just three years after Ludus Tonalis, Hartmann's Piano Sonata [No.2] depicts the shuffling feet of 20,000 camp prisoners from Dachau whom Hartmann watched being marched away from the approaching Allies. The subtitle of Hartmann's work, '27 April 1945', is clarified by an epigraph the composer (in his own words) positioned at the head of the score 'On the 27th and 28th of April 1945 trudged an endless stream of Dachau prisoners of war past us... unending was the misery... unending was the sorrow'. This is made explicit by the (central) Lento, a 'Marcia funebre' that ranks with Hartmann's finest utterances; it's sombre and fatalistic tread - shot through with fanfare-like elements - reaching an impassioned climax before regaining it's mood of numbed sorrow. 2017 . Following the of his stunning Venetian Concertos, composer/pianist David Chesky has written two new concertos, this time for piano. Inspired by the chaos of his adopted New York City, these virtuosic concertos are a mixture of energy, rhythmic drive and serenity. Like most of his recent work, they combine modern compositional styles with both jazz and reverence to classical forms in Chesky's own unique manner. Like his Venetian Concertos, Chesky's Piano Concerto No. 2 can be described as a Inchcollision of atonal harmonies in counterpointInch. The first movement contains many fugal sections including a contrapuntal interplay among the flute, piano and strings. The entire movement is a moto perpetuo, which ends in a frenzy. The quiet second movement, the heart of this concerto, is one of the most tranquil, mesmerizing and sublime music in all of Chesky's compositions. In contrast, the third movement seems violent and builds to a powerful climactic ending. With it's celebration of jazz, which he combines with a little ragtime in the finale, Chesky has referred to his third concerto as his Inchjazz piano concertoInch. The first movement combines South American dance with fugue, blues, and jazz. The second movement prominently features interaction among the piano, glockenspiel and vibraphone. The third movement contains a syncopated section in the middle, where Chesky adapts his 2013 Second New York Rag InchThe BernsteinInch as an homage to Leonard Bernstein. The entire movement from the beginning to it's propulsive coda is a tour de force for all the performers. Ten years after his last piano concerto, Chesky has now given us two more extremely impressive ones.
