Granados was primarily influenced by mid-nineteenth century European Romanticism, especially the music of Schumann and Chopin. The introverted luxuriance of his luminous harmonies, his rich palette of pianistic color, loose formal structures and his vivid imagination, always tinged with nostalgia, place him firmly within the Romantic School. It has frequently been commented that large forms, such as sonatas and concertos did not attract him. His artistic personality was better suited to shorter, rhapsodic forms, especially those based on variations. All of the compositions recorded here are works of Granados's juvenilia composed between 1884, the year he began studying with Felipe Pedrell in Barcelona (followed by further studies in Paris, 1887-1889), and ending about 1895. As a group they are generally immature works of a young composer striving to find his own individual artistic personality. Many of these pieces are somewhat similar to one another, being sketches or brief compositions characterized by an unfocused formal structure and harmonic ambiguity. Very few of them are firmly rooted in one tonality. Granados frequently vacillated from one tonality to another and had a tendency to place the final cadence of a given composition on the dominant, consequently not concluding the work in the original tonality. The second of Ivo Varbanov on ICSM Records (ICSM Records 004) presents early piano works by Johannes Brahms his Piano Sonata no. 1 in C major, Op. 1, the Scherzo, Op. 4, and the four Ballades, Op. 10. All three piano works were performed at crucial moments in Brahms's life The Piano Sonata was the focus of one of the most romantic first encounters in musical history. The handsome 20-year-old-unknown from Hamburg presented himself at Robert Schumann's house in Düsseldorf on 1 October 1853. Schumann invited him to play something, and he sat down to begin the C major Sonata. Visit from Brahms, a genius, wrote Schumann in his diary for that day. The Scherzo Op. 4 was one of the first works Brahms showed to Franz Liszt and to Schumann in 1853. Liszt found the piece so congenial that he played it to an assembled company at Weimar. Lastly, the Ballades emerged at a fateful juncture in the 21-year-old Brahms's life, shortly after his revered friend and patron Schumann had attempted suicide and been confined in a sanatorium near Bonn. Brahms had thus suddenly been thrust into the role of protector and comforter of Schumann's wife Clara and her children, and was simultaneously wrestling with the fact that he had fallen in love with her. The Ballades, his first group of short lyric pieces, are prophetic of the compressed masterpieces of his later years. Varbanov's visionary choice of pieces is matched by his powerful rendition. Dr. Albert Schelb writes InchAs a composer, Josef Schelb incorporated the most important styles that had developed around the turn of the century into his early compositions, although most of these were destroyed in an air raid on Karlsruhe in 1942. After war, Schelb turned to impressionism, expressionism, atonality and finally also to twelve-tone composition, but without ever committing himself exclusively to any one of these styles. Self-taught, he combined them to develop a style all of his own, and followed, so to speak, his own rules of development. Throughout his life, his speciality was the polyphonic treatment of motifs and themes, which he handled strictly or playfully, as main elements or in episodes. His polyphony is never dry and academic, but rather is always paired with a dash of warming Romantic sensuality in sound. This even applies to his late orchestral music and Movimenti of the 1960s and 1970s, in which the themes are always twelve-tone expressionistic, but the harmony is also distinctly impressionistic.Inch
