L'Orfeo Barockorchester and it's director Michi Gaigg have created an impressive discography through their close collaboration with cpo. Their repertoire spans from Baroque and Classical instrumental works to Schubert's symphonies and includes rarely performed compositions by Telemann and Haydn's delightful Incontro improvviso. New to the cpo catalog is their exploration of Johann Sebastian Bach by this refined, spirited ensemble. Seven sacred solo cantatas form the program, featuring two proven specialists in early music who sing the vocal part Dutch bass-baritone Peter Kooij, awarded the Leipzig Bach Medal in 2016, and Austrian alto Margot Oitzinger compellingly demonstrate how people in the time of the great Thomaskantor strove to guide Christians on the right path.

Born in Paris on November 5, 1928 to a musical family of Moldovan Jewish immigrants, young Devy Erlih was soon recognized as an outstanding and talented prodigy. The family made it through the WWII German occupation and after the war Erlih continued his studies. He won the coveted Paris conservatoire Premier Prix and his career as violin soloist began. In 1955 Erlih won the International Long-Thibaud competition and subsequently toured throughout Europe, America and Japan. In addition to his vast standard classical repertoire, he became a champion of contemporary composers including Bartok, Jolivet, Dutilleux, Sauguet, Maderna, Ropartz, Tomasi, Lejet, Jacques Charpentier, Denisov, Julien Falk, Paul Le Flem, and Loucheur. Many composers wrote concertos or sonatas for him. Erlih was also a noted teacher and was on staff at the Paris Conservatoire. He combined the raw gypsy music styles of his Balkan heritage with the refined elegance of the French violin school and his recordings are highly sought after by collectors. Here, he is heard performing Bach's Sonatas and Partitas.

He is one of the most productive of Viennese composers; the diversity of his oeuvre reads like a kaleidoscope of musical genres known at the time. He wrote sacred works as well as the German-language magic operas that were so popular at the time.
