SOMM RECORDINGS announces a tribute; marking the centenary of his birth; to the English baritone John Carol Case with the first of his performance of Schubert's Winterreise; accompanied by Raymond Calcraft. One of the leading baritones of his generation; John Carol Case was known for his power and poetry in diverse roles from Bach to Gilbert and Sullivan; including Elgar's The Apostles; Vaughan Williams's Dona Nobis Pacem and The Pilgrim's Progress; Finzi's songs; and as an indelible 'Christus' in Bach's St. Matthew Passion. Fifty years after it was recorded in Wesley Central Hall; Portsmouth; Case's remarkable account of Winterreise reveals him to be a commanding, insightful interpreter of Schubert's masterpiece. Restored from reel-to-reel tape by Oscar Torres; Andrew Keener and Paul Baily (also responsible for the Mastering); the performance is now released for the first time. Raymond Calcraft studied conducting with Sir Adrian Boult and has worked with choirs and orchestras in the UK and internationally. He enjoyed a long relationship with the Bournemouth Sinfonietta; conducted and recorded with the Royal Philharmonic Orchestra; and has collaborated with Pepe Romero; Patricia Rozario; Janice Watson; Julian Lloyd Webber and others. Calcraft; Case's accompanist of choice during the last five years of his career before retiring in 1967; contributes an affectionate memoir of their relationship; in which he describes John Carol Case's singing as being Inchnotable for an almost tenor-like quality in it's upper register; his remarkable breath control; and above all for the clarity and eloquence of his dictionInch. Peter Schreier took his time before tackling this Inchdifficult pieceInch, rarely performed by tenors. His legendary live recording of February 15, 1985 with pianist Sviatoslav Richter is a striking debut and a unique document. In the ensuing years he chose to interpret Schubert's Winter Journey with András Schiff as a sympathetic accompanist. In his 70th birthday year, Schreier returned once again to the studio in March 2005 to record the version of Winter Journey arranged for voice and string quartet by the Kassel composer Jens Josef. The album is a musical and poetic rumination on the concept of truth. Beginning with an exercise in perception with Nicole Lizée's short InchZeiss After DarkInch which Inchevokes the cinematographic effect of the Zeiss lens, used to film intimate scenes lit only by candles.Inch This is followed by artist Yao's poem InchStrange Absurdities,Inch a piece which challenges the listener to cultivate our common humanity. Humanity is at the core as the album continues with Shostakovich's Symphony No.9 from 1945. Shostakovich, whose very humanity was challenged by the oppressive authorities of his time, composed his Ninth Symphony in the final year of World War II. In the same year, on the other side of the world - a composer who had fled the Europe because of the war, Erich Wolfgang Korngold, composed his Violin Concerto for Jascha Heifetz. The concept of truth, what was true for Shostakovich or Korngold, seems to be an issue of personal artistic integrity. The same is true with this world premiere recording of Philip Glass's Symphony No.13. Commissioned to honor the memory of journalist Peter Jennings, in a period of strife worldwide for journalist, Glass himself pushed back on the idea of music having the ability to express any definite ideas about truth. Glass's Thirteenth Symphony was composed in the period of 2020-22, largely during the period of lockdown according to what was happening with the worldwide pandemic. After a series of large-scale symphonic works, Glass's new symphony is one of his shortest at only 22 minutes and belies a calmness and reflection, in all three of it's movements. Album Tracks 1.
