Captured live in a gripping concert event dated 30 August 1964, at a point in time many consider the prime of his career or something very close to it, Herbert von Karajan here offers a dazzlingly powerful display of his mastery in music of Richard Strauss, specifically two of the composer's great tone poems, Don Quixote, op. 35 and Also Sprach Zarathustra, op. 30. He is ably aided by his soloists Rudolf Streng, violist, member of the Vienna Philharmonic, founding member of the reformed Barylli Quartett active during the decade of the 1950s, and later to be heard in the Vienna Philharmonic String Quartet, and French cellist Pierre Fournier, one of the greatest at his instrument in the 20th c., known as the Incharistocrat of cellistsInch in his lifetime for his lyricism and refinement. The Vienna Philharmonic, by this time fully rejuvenated from it's wartime decline, is in superb shape. His legendary live recording of February 15, 1985 with pianist Sviatoslav Richter is a striking debut and a unique document. In the ensuing years he chose to interpret Schubert's Winter Journey with András Schiff as a sympathetic accompanist. In his 70th birthday year, Schreier returned once again to the studio in March 2005 to record the version of Winter Journey arranged for voice and string quartet by the Kassel composer Jens Josef. It's time to get back in shape. Walking is a great way to do it. Want to listen to shape note singing too? Try 'Saints Bound For Heaven', the walking recording sung by the Santa Cruz Shape Note Society. Shape up with shape notes! Our local Sacred Harp group has produced a delightful studio recording of Sacred Harp songs to accompany walking (though honestly we think it's fun to listen from the couch as well). The recording is 60 minutes long; cassette or our brand new CD! When you walk with it, if you start with your right foot on the downbeats your right hand will practice leading! The music starts at 100 beats per minute (bpm) and speeds up to 120 bpm by the beginning of the second side. Then it slows back down again towards the end for a cool down. Turn around at the end of the first side and you'll be back where you started by the end of the second side. Listening to the recording also provides a good way to practice your part on over 30 SH songs. The bible verses at the beginning of the songs are there too; read while the song is being shaped.
