This, the final CD in the trilogy, concludes the Todd Rhodes story with his final recordings for King Records from 1952-54. The loss of the band's star vocalist, LaVern Baker, in 1953 to Atlantic Records was a severe blow from which the band never really recovered. The two final sessions included just two vocal numbers, with the group relying on the instrumentals which had formerly made it famous. None, however, made any impression on the national charts. Following the last session for King, the musicians held together doing session work for the local Fortune tag and, later after the band had finally split up, for Motown where drummer Benny Benjamin would become a legend. Brilliant Classics Orchestra Sinfonica di Roma - Respighi Collection (Italian Romatics Series) - COMPACT DISCS [CD]

The most comprehensive set ever compiled of instrumental music by Respighi, featuring classic scores such as The Pines of Rome alongside hidden treasures of chamber music. All modern recordings made by native Italian musicians between 2009 and 2015 both an ideal starting and destination point for anyone looking to explore the vibrantly coloured musical world of Respighi. Italy's landscape and history supplied Ottorino Respighi with a deep and seemingly inexhaustible well of inspiration and material on which to draw. Works as superficially diverse as the elegantly neoclassical Ancient Airs and Dances, and the opulently orchestrated extravaganza of the Roman trilogy, are united by Respighi's care for his native heritage, and his curation of it as a living object. He is, in this sense, no less centrally an Italian composer than those of his colleagues dedicated to continuing the opera tradition, from Bellini to Puccini. Yet there is so much more to Respighi than those two collections. There is the hour-long Sinfonia Drammatica which finds Respighi at his most Straussian. There is the pulsating and neoclassical Toccata for piano and orchestra, the contrasting delicacy of the orchestral triptych after paintings of Botticelli, the withdrawn beauty of his Church Windows sequence, and a sequence of concertante works for violin and orchestra, none of which fit neatly into the 'romantic concerto' template. Perhaps the least known and most intriguing work in his orchestral output is his dark and brooding Metamorphoseon, commissioned by Serge Koussevitzky in 1930 and thus long predating Richard Strauss's postwar elegy of (almost) the same name. The piano and chamber works of Respighi illuminate complementary aspects of his identity, such as his feeling for long-breathed melody and drama in the violin sonatas, and the deft turns of phrase in his student-era piano pieces. Acrobat Tony Pastor & His Orchestra - Collection 1940-51 - COMPACT DISCS [CD]

Tony Pastor was a jazz and big band saxophonist, singer and bandleader who was with Artie Shaw's orchestra during the '30s before launching his own band in 1940, subsequently enjoying a highly successful chart career through the 1940s with a distinctive style of upbeat and entertaining middle-of-the-road music, including the novelty-flavoured material popular in that era. In the later years of the decade, he provided an early career opportunity for Rosemary Clooney and her sister Betty, who recorded with Pastor through 1948-49, and who are featured on a dozen or more titles here. This 72-track 3-CD set comprises selected A and B sides from his singles on the Bluebird, RCA-Victor, Cosmo and Columbia labels during this era, and features all his fifteen US chart entries, including the Top 10 hits InchMaria ElenaInch, InchDance With A DollyInch, InchBell Bottom TrousersInch, Sioux City SueInch, InchRed Silk Stockings And Green PerfumeInch and InchThe Lady From Twenty-Nine PalmsInch. It features at least one side of a significant proportion of his releases during these years. Along with Tony Pastor himself and The Clooney Sisters, featured vocalists include Johnny McAfee, Eugenie Baird, Dorsey Anderson, Kay Little, Elisse Cooper, Kay Foster, Rita McCullough and Virginia Maxey. It's a substantial and enjoyable showcase for the music of an artist who is not much talked about these days but who made a significant contribution to the popular music of this primary decade and more of his career. Album Tracks 1. Dance with a Dolly (With a Hole in Her Stocking) 2. The Rhymin' Game (Rhyme Your Name) 3. It Never Entered My Mind 4. I Want to Live (As Long As You Love Me) 5.
