The Sun Studio Sessions represents the second consecutive live recording in JPL's career. This record, unlike Live 2001 which was recorded at Douglas Corner Café, is a very intimate hybrid record of live tracks recorded with just a guitar and vocals in a studio setting. James recorded the tracks while standing on the spot where many music legions -such as Elvis Presley, Johnny Cash, Carl Perkins, Jerry Lee Lewis, Charlie Rich and Roy Orbison- got their start, He included a terrific mix of new material and never recorded classics. Rockin' Chair is a bluesy kind of song that makes you want to lean back, relax and forget about your problems. Southern Porches is written so descriptively that when listening to this song it feels like you are looking at an old black and white photo album from James' childhood. The vocal delivery on the recording is both delicate and captivating. Sittin', Thinkin', and Drinkin' is about a guy who's had a pretty hard night and starts giving advice. James won't say, but he may have lived this song once or twice. Hands of a Guitar Man is a crowd favorite. It's a semi-biographical song about doubt and discovery. The lyrics are true and cross many metaphorical boundaries. The essence is that if you have the desire, you can accomplish anything you put your mind, or hands, to. Fruit of Your Labor is a truly romantic song about a husband and wife who, after many years of marriage, still know how to express their love for one another. The Only Thing Missing, is My Son was written about James' father. It is an extremely personal song that again let's us see a piece of his soul. Love Can Be Like a Muddy River is an up-tempo love song that will get your toe tapping or make you want to flat out dance. It talks about how love can be exciting at times and trying at others, but you have to stick with it because there are Inchclear watersInch down the line.

Mike Caruso Quintet - Song for Amy - COMPACT DISCS [CD]

I took guitar lessons in grade school and started exploring Jazz in High School. I studied Electrical Engineering in college and my career is in the field of Integrated Circuit Design. Since college I have continued to play music but got more serious about Jazz and performing the last 8 years. For the last several years I have been studying the double bass and regularly perform on that instrument with the Metro West Jazz Project. The CD was a chance for me to document my compositions as well as my love of playing the guitar and upright bass. Most of all, it was a real honor to play with such a great group of musicians. I owe a lot to Molly Flannery who enthusiastically supported the project from the beginning in January of 2007. She helped to arrange the music and also with production while in the studio. I could not have done this without her help and am very grateful. I owe so much to my wife and children who took care of me, got me back to health and who's artwork graces this website and CD. I love you all very much. As for the music on the record, I like something with a memorable melody and/or rhythmic hook. Some of my influences are The Pat Metheny Group, The Yellowjackets, Lee Rittenour and Wes Montgomery. Several of the songs explore different time signatures. Three Flowers for example starts out in 3/4 time, modulates to 5/4 for the improvised section and then back to 3/4 for the end. Song For Amy, which was written for my wife while we were dating was originally composed in 4/4 time. Upon looking at the lead sheet, Molly started to hear it in 7/4. Playing it in 7/4 really gave it a swirling feeling, kind of like being in love. The song \'What Exit\' has a very simple form but for each improviser we changed up the underlying drums ( bebop for the head moves to funk and hiphop for each of the soloists ) so as to provide a rhythmically varying backdrop. Anyone performing John Cage's music cannot avoid silence. In all the works performed in this collection, percussionist Matthias Kaul deals with silence and how it can be realized in the most concrete way. Kaul is not only a percussionist, he is also a composer and therefore equipped for such a task. In Variations I, Cage plays with various forms of silence. The score consists of transparent sheets with dots and lines and the performers generates concrete tones, sounds and InchpausesInch. The playing instructions for Inlets are still more rudimentary; there are three performers, each of whom has four conch shells. The shells are filled with water and turned round and round; then a fire fueled by pine cones begins, and the piece ends when one of the shells blown like a horn. In Child of Tree, the performer must toss coins to determine how many sections to divide the eight minutes into and which instruments to use in which sections.
