Canada's National Arts Centre Orchestra - Truth In Our Time - Glass: Symphony No.13 - COMPACT DISCS [CD]

The album is a musical and poetic rumination on the concept of truth. Beginning with an exercise in perception with Nicole Lizée's short InchZeiss After DarkInch which Inchevokes the cinematographic effect of the Zeiss lens, used to film intimate scenes lit only by candles.Inch This is followed by artist Yao's poem InchStrange Absurdities,Inch a piece which challenges the listener to cultivate our common humanity. Humanity is at the core as the album continues with Shostakovich's Symphony No.9 from 1945. Shostakovich, whose very humanity was challenged by the oppressive authorities of his time, composed his Ninth Symphony in the final year of World War II. In the same year, on the other side of the world - a composer who had fled the Europe because of the war, Erich Wolfgang Korngold, composed his Violin Concerto for Jascha Heifetz. The concept of truth, what was true for Shostakovich or Korngold, seems to be an issue of personal artistic integrity. The same is true with this world premiere recording of Philip Glass's Symphony No.13. Commissioned to honor the memory of journalist Peter Jennings, in a period of strife worldwide for journalist, Glass himself pushed back on the idea of music having the ability to express any definite ideas about truth. Glass's Thirteenth Symphony was composed in the period of 2020-22, largely during the period of lockdown according to what was happening with the worldwide pandemic. After a series of large-scale symphonic works, Glass's new symphony is one of his shortest at only 22 minutes and belies a calmness and reflection, in all three of it's movements. Album Tracks 1. The second volume of Leone Sinigaglia's music for string quartet (Volume 1 is on 8.574183) explores a series of generally shorter pieces for the medium. These deeply expressive works, such as the yearning Romanzafor string quartet and horn, combine compositional rigour with a flowing Italianate lyricism nurtured in the years 1888-89. Also included are the String Trio in A major, which evokes the world of the Baroque through it's Bachian counterpoint, and the Trio-Serenata, fusing elysian beauty with joyful elegance. All but one of these pieces are world premiere recordings, many of which are played from the composer's original manuscripts.

New York based contemporary vocal ensemble Ekmeles releases InchA Howl, That Was also a Prayer,Inch a collection of premieres by Erin Gee, Christopher Trapani, and Taylor Brook that explores innovative territory in vocal writing, notably microtonality and alternate temperaments. Ekmeles is a vocal ensemble dedicated to the performance of new and rarely-heard works, and gems of the historical avant garde. New York is home to a vibrant instrumental New Music scene, with a relative paucity of vocal music. Ekmeles was founded to fill the gap by presenting new a cappella repertoire for solo voices, and by collaborating with these instrumental ensembles. Director Jeffrey Gavett brings a hybrid vision to the group he is an accomplished ensemble singer and performer of new works, and holds degrees from Westminster Choir College and Manhattan School of Music's Contemporary Performance Program. He has assembled a virtuoso group of colleagues who bring their own diverse backgrounds to bear on the unique challenges of this essential and neglected repertoire.
