This album is a story of family and friendship. Positioned between homage to a father figure and modernity, the viola da gamba sonatas of Carl Philipp Emanuel and Johann Christian Bach are a revealing element in the history of the Bach family and it's ties of friendship with two families of virtuoso instrumentalists, the Abels and the Hesses, who had already inspired the work of Johann Sebastian. Carl Philipp Emanuel was active in Berlin, encouraged by the presence of the violist Ludwig Christian Hesse and the enthusiasm of his patron Frederick the Great (InchWhen I am not reading, I am writing, and when I am not writing, I am playing the violInch wrote his nephew, the future Friedrich Wilhelm II). The friendship between Carl Friedrich Abel and Johann Christian gave rise to the latter's sonatas in London. This Arcana is not only a continuation of Guido Balestracci's recording of J.S. Bach's viola da gamba sonatas that was awarded a CHOC by Le Monde de la Musique, but is also a celebration of one of the greatest families in the history of music. Guido Balestracci, together here with keyboard player Paolo Corsi, presents another instalment of his long-term project with the l'Amoroso ensemble the re-evaluation of the viola da gamba and the other members of it's family, with a special focus on the lesser-known post-baroque repertoire. His programmes of music for viol by Schaffrath, Haydn's Divertimenti for baryton, and a Schubertiade based on the arpeggione all bear witness to this.

Beginning with an exercise in perception with Nicole Lizée's short InchZeiss After DarkInch which Inchevokes the cinematographic effect of the Zeiss lens, used to film intimate scenes lit only by candles.Inch This is followed by artist Yao's poem InchStrange Absurdities,Inch a piece which challenges the listener to cultivate our common humanity. Humanity is at the core as the album continues with Shostakovich's Symphony No.9 from 1945. Shostakovich, whose very humanity was challenged by the oppressive authorities of his time, composed his Ninth Symphony in the final year of World War II. In the same year, on the other side of the world - a composer who had fled the Europe because of the war, Erich Wolfgang Korngold, composed his Violin Concerto for Jascha Heifetz. The concept of truth, what was true for Shostakovich or Korngold, seems to be an issue of personal artistic integrity. The same is true with this world premiere recording of Philip Glass's Symphony No.13. Commissioned to honor the memory of journalist Peter Jennings, in a period of strife worldwide for journalist, Glass himself pushed back on the idea of music having the ability to express any definite ideas about truth. Glass's Thirteenth Symphony was composed in the period of 2020-22, largely during the period of lockdown according to what was happening with the worldwide pandemic. After a series of large-scale symphonic works, Glass's new symphony is one of his shortest at only 22 minutes and belies a calmness and reflection, in all three of it's movements. Album Tracks 1. Ekmeles is a vocal ensemble dedicated to the performance of new and rarely-heard works, and gems of the historical avant garde. New York is home to a vibrant instrumental New Music scene, with a relative paucity of vocal music. Ekmeles was founded to fill the gap by presenting new a cappella repertoire for solo voices, and by collaborating with these instrumental ensembles. Director Jeffrey Gavett brings a hybrid vision to the group he is an accomplished ensemble singer and performer of new works, and holds degrees from Westminster Choir College and Manhattan School of Music's Contemporary Performance Program. He has assembled a virtuoso group of colleagues who bring their own diverse backgrounds to bear on the unique challenges of this essential and neglected repertoire.
