Benjamin Schmid - Gulda & Weill: Concertos for Violin & Wind Orchestra - COMPACT DISCS [CD]

Benjamin Schmid has long been considered one of the most versatile violin virtuosos of our time, being equally at home in the classical as well as in the jazz genre. Following his album with Jazz Violin Concertos, Schmid doubles down with the Salzburg Wind Philharmonic under the direction of conducted by Hansjorg Angerer with works by Friedrich Gulda and Kurt Weill. Gulda opened up a new era of musical freedom with his InchConcerto for Violoncello and wind orchestraInch (here in a version for violin) at it's world premiere in 1981 at the Vienna Konzerthaus in 1981. The zest of pop music, yodeling themes, brass bands from the Salzkammergut, brass music on Kirtag, swing, funk and free-jazz borrowings all come together to create a rousing whole that leaves not a dry eye in the house - with cheerfulness and joie de vivre. With the Violin Concerto op. 12, which was premiered in 1925, Kurt Weill's breakthrough. In Weill's oeuvre this work represents the peak of his avant-garde tendencies The harmony tells of his admiration of Arnold Schoenberg, the formal characteristics of the influence of Busoni, the often motoric rhythm of the knowledge of Paul Hindemith. Two works for solo violin - InchFor FritzInch (dedicated to Fritz Kreisler) by Benjamin Schmid and InchYoukaliInch by Kurt Weill - complement this brilliant performance.

This album is a story of family and friendship. Positioned between homage to a father figure and modernity, the viola da gamba sonatas of Carl Philipp Emanuel and Johann Christian Bach are a revealing element in the history of the Bach family and it's ties of friendship with two families of virtuoso instrumentalists, the Abels and the Hesses, who had already inspired the work of Johann Sebastian. Carl Philipp Emanuel was active in Berlin, encouraged by the presence of the violist Ludwig Christian Hesse and the enthusiasm of his patron Frederick the Great (InchWhen I am not reading, I am writing, and when I am not writing, I am playing the violInch wrote his nephew, the future Friedrich Wilhelm II). The friendship between Carl Friedrich Abel and Johann Christian gave rise to the latter's sonatas in London. This Arcana is not only a continuation of Guido Balestracci's recording of J.S. Bach's viola da gamba sonatas that was awarded a CHOC by Le Monde de la Musique, but is also a celebration of one of the greatest families in the history of music. Guido Balestracci, together here with keyboard player Paolo Corsi, presents another instalment of his long-term project with the l'Amoroso ensemble the re-evaluation of the viola da gamba and the other members of it's family, with a special focus on the lesser-known post-baroque repertoire. His programmes of music for viol by Schaffrath, Haydn's Divertimenti for baryton, and a Schubertiade based on the arpeggione all bear witness to this.

Following their Linn debut, a 'breathtaking album of songs by Gustav and Alma Mahler' (The Herald), Karen Cargill and Simon Lepper return to fin-de-siècle Europe for a recital of songs by the 'crème de la crème' of late nineteenth-century French speaking composers. Entitled Fleur de mon âme, the album embraces the sensual soundworld of Hahn, Debussy, Chausson, Jongen and Duparc. The album opens with À Chloris which recalls the elegance of the seventeenth century before borrowing from the poetry of Ancient Greece in Chansons de Bilitis and setting sail on a calm sea with Chausson's Sérénade italienne. Guest soloists from the Royal Scottish National Orchestra add orchestral colour to Chausson's Chanson perpétuelle and Calmes, aux quais déserts by lesser-known Belgian composer Joseph Jongen.
