Beethoven composed a total of eight works for cello and piano, whose sheer joy and ingenuity are hard to beat and are wonderfully captured in this live recording. The French cellist Marc Coppey and Peter Laul, his St Petersburg partner at the piano, perform these works with great character and energy, creating an impeccable, sparkling sound in the popular variations and substantial sonatas. As a venue for their InchBeethoven marathonInch, they opted for the Small Hall of the St Petersburg Philharmonia it's historical ambience, steeped in tradition, and the supremely attentive audience create atmosphere as well as inspiration. The experimental female vocal trio Juice Vocal Ensemble joins Resonus Classics for this unique and innovative collection of seasonal and winter music for upper voices. Formed around works written specially for Juice in a call for scores on a wintry theme, the programme of world premiere recordings also contains new works and arrangements by the group's three members as well as pieces from Simon Speare, Tarik O'Regan, Bernard Hughes David Breslin, and a new commission from composer Emily Hall. Juice are at the forefront of the UK's experimental/classical scene, performing new vocal music which draws on classical, world music, jazz, folk, pop, improvisation, and theatre. As early as his Piano Concerto in A minor, Wq1, which he composed in Leipzig at the age of 19, it was hard for Carl Philipp Emanuel Bach to conceal his ability to weave his own stylistic flair into the still nascent genre of the piano concerto. This can be seen not only pianistically in unconventional technical demands (leaps of up to two octaves combined with melodic writing, elaborate embellishments and other features typical of instrumental works) but also in unexpected extensions of the formal layout and at times abruptly harsh passages. Starting with Wq1, Carl Philipp Emanuel Bach proved the tremendous potential for development and transformation of this genre. The concertos would occupy him all his life and constantly take him along new pathways. Thus, in the course of 55 years a cosmos emerged which only our generation has been given the opportunity to discover.

During the pandemic, I chanced upon the composer's Piano Sonata No. 2 while looking for new repertoire and inspiration for myself and the group of my students. I was surprised that such a beautiful piece was practically unknown and not performed in public. Being under the impression of that composition, I decided to learn more about it's creator. Sergei Bortkiewicz turned out to be not only an extremely colorful figure with an interesting biography, but also a very 'prolific' composer who left behind many wonderful works, not only for piano.Inch
